Current Research Projects
Current projects at InHANSE include:
Clinical trials
ART DECO (collaborating centre): A randomised multicentre radiotherapy study of dose escalated intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) versus conventional radiotherapy in patients receiving treatment for locally advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers.
ASPOD: Aspirin mouthwash for the treatment of oral dysplasia - phase 1 feasibility trial.
Costar (collaborating centre): A multicentre randomised study of cochlear sparing intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) versus conventional radiotherapy in patients with parotid tumours.
De-ESCALaTE HPV: Determination of epidermal growth factor receptor-inhibitor (cetuximab) versus standard chemoradiotherapy early and late toxicity events in human papilloma virus–positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
HEAD AND NECK 5000 (collaborating centre): The aim of the research is to look at care for people with head and neck cancer. This will be the largest study to examine the factors that affect outcome for people with head and neck cancer. This study will help us understand more about head and neck cancer and how we can improve care for people diagnosed with one of these cancers.
OME (collaborating centre): To evaluate an association between chronic otitis media with effusion (COME) and recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM) in UK hospital populations with the genetic loci Fbxo11 and Evil.
Oromouth: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) prevalence in the mouth and oropharynx of the general population.
PET-Neck: A multi-centre randomised UK trial comparing current management of neck dissection with Positron Emission Tomography-Computerised Tomography scan (PET-CT) guided surveillance policy for the management of advanced nodal disease in head and neck patients.
PREDICTR - HNC: Improving treatment selection using predictive classifiers of treatment response for head and neck cancers and dysplasia.
QUENCh: Quality of life driven consultations in head and neck cancer follow-up a mixed methods feasibility study in nurse and doctor led clinics.
TCUK IN (collaborating centre): Thyroid Cancer Genetic Investigation in the United Kingdon. Looking at common genetic facotrs, open to anyone who has had thyroid cancer before the age of 80. Blood and tumour samples are collected to identify molecular changes that occur during the development of the cancer.
Basic sciences and molecular biology
Clinical and molecular predictors of progression of oral and laryngeal dysplasia to cancer
PET NECK Collect: banking of tissue and blood samples from Pet Neck Trial.
Quality of life and behavioural studies
DETERMIN: Determination of patient preferences of quality of life neck cancer and quality life questionnaires.
DeteQT: Determination of quality of life instrument most preferred by patients with early and advanced thyroid cancer.
Systematic reviews
Efficacy of PET scanning in the detection of residual and recurrent disease following chemoradiotherapy for head and neck cancer.
Systematic review of follow-up strategies following surgical treatment of oral and laryngeal dysplasia.
Systematic review of efficacy of ultrasound and fine needle aspiration in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer.
Systematic reviews of management of micropapillary carcinoma and microinvasive thyroid carcinoma.
